Free Easy Sheet Music for All Stars

All Star is a song by Smash Mouth – written in 1999.

The song did very well back then.

And two years later it was used in the movie Shrek.

Which helped the song do even better.

Did you know:

The song was written as a kind of anthem for outcasts. So it was a great fit for big green Shrek.

Anyway, we'll be looking at some piano music today…

In this post we'll use our eyes and ears to compare two different versions of All Star piano sheet music:

An easy version.

And a harder version. I'm going to call it the hard version. But it's more of an intermediate level. I just prefer to think of this post as easy vs hard. Makes it easier to write. And probably more interesting to read too.

So read on… and listen on… and hopefully this post helps you pick one to learn. Because even though this song wasn't written for piano, it does sound really good on piano.

We'll start with the verse.

The easy version of the verse is shown just below.

As you can see, the sheet music doesn't look too difficult to play.

So there's no chords here. Just single notes in the left hand. And single notes in the right hand.

And the rhythm is quite straightforward too.

Now comparing that with the hard version…

Below you can see there are some two note chords played with the right hand.

But still just single notes with the left hand. However, the rhythm is a bit more complex.

I like that the hard version includes the chord name above each harmony change, in the sheet music.

This can be helpful…

If you know your chords.

Because you can add your own variations or embellishment. This is something I'm working on myself. It's not easy. But I'm hoping to eventually do my own arrangements of these songs. I talk about this type of thing in my email newsletter (more on that at the end of this post).

Anyway, let's move on to the chorus…

So when we get to the chorus, the easy version introduces some two note chords in the left hand.

And it keeps the right hand pretty simple:

The hard version uses two note chords in the right hand.

And keeps the left hand pretty simple. Just repeated eighth notes for each chord change:

To end off this post we'll take a quick look at how each version of sheet music approaches the ending.

And we'll start with the easy version again:

Similarly to the chorus, the easy version uses two note chords in the left hand.

And single notes in the right hand.

And the hard version does something similar to the chorus too. It uses the repeated eighth notes in the left hand with some chords and single note runs in the right hand.

However, is that a three note chord I see in the right hand (first bar)?

It is!

A full G chord (major triad).

All Star Piano Sheet Music – Summary

Overall, I would say the easy version does a good job of providing an easy piano sheet music arrangement. My only issue is that it doesn't provide any music for the section which goes:

"Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'…".

It kinda just skips over it.

Whereas the hard version does cover all the sections, it provides the lyrics, the chord changes. However, I would have liked to see bigger chords being used to fill out the music a bit more. But, if you know your chords, you can always add them in yourself.

And that's about all for this post.
